Gaining admission into the University had always been my aspiration. I encountered numerous obstacles during the admission process that nearly led me to abandon my dream. Eventually, I secured admission after most of my peers had already been accepted. Some of them in private institutions had already commenced classes while I remained at home, waiting with anticipation and hope.

On the 17th of December, 2023, I received my admission letter to pursue Journalism and Media Studies at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) in Rivers State. Initially, I had applied for Law, but due to the delay in my admission, I grew anxious about the possibility of having to retake the entrance exam. Consequently, I sought approval for a transfer to Mass Communication.

Opening the acceptance letter filled me with a rush of excitement and nervousness. It marked the commencement of a journey I had long awaited, and the initial months in the Journalism and Media Studies program have been truly transformative. These early experiences have not only expanded my academic horizons but also facilitated my personal and professional growth.

Receiving the acceptance letter served as a moment of validation for all the effort I had invested in my application and examinations. I eagerly envisioned the upcoming classes, discussions, and opportunities that awaited me. My aspirations were filled with thoughts of reporting on impactful stories and making a difference through the media. I vividly recall my childhood days when I would conduct interview sessions with friends and relatives. What was once a hobby is now gradually materializing into my reality.

I embarked on my academic journey with the clearance process, which, contrary to expectations, was not as arduous as portrayed. Perhaps my excitement overshadowed any potential stress. My primary desire was to be officially recognized as an undergraduate at the university. Following the clearance, I commenced lectures the subsequent week. The initial day of classes was a blend of overwhelming emotions and exhilaration. Navigating the corridors, I experienced a mix of anxiety and excitement. The orientation program was a whirlwind of introductions, providing insights into the university's academic framework, course registration procedures, library access, grading system, diversity initiatives, safety protocols, and emergency procedures.

Upon encountering my lecturers for the first time, I felt a sense of apprehension fueled by the rumors surrounding university educators as being 'harsh' and 'unyielding.' However, I soon realized that they were merely firm and adhered to a code of conduct, requiring nothing more than obedience. Establishing friendships was not a challenge for me, given my ability to connect with individuals and form relationships swiftly, although I was discerning in selecting companions.

The volume of assignments allocated by the lecturers was substantial enough to steer even the most lackluster student in the right direction. It honed my research skills, enabling me to acquire knowledge and deepen my understanding of the given tasks. I learned that attentive listening is a cornerstone of academic success, a realization reinforced during my first semester examinations, where questions aligned with the teachings and explanations provided, rather than relying solely on the course materials. Additionally, I cultivated the habit of tuning into the news each morning.

Financial constraints posed a significant challenge during my initial semester as a freshman. Securing funds was no easy feat, and persuading my parents of the necessity of certain payments proved to be quite distressing. Moreover, I found the supplementary courses somewhat daunting until the practical component was introduced. The Film and Multimedia course (FMM) significantly boosted my confidence. Collaborative group projects fostered teamwork and underscored the value of cooperation. These connections have been instrumental in shaping my academic journey and professional aspirations.

The initial months have been a period of substantial personal growth. I have gained confidence in my abilities, improved time management skills, and honed my communication abilities. Most importantly, I have developed a deeper appreciation for the influence of journalism and media in shaping public opinion and driving societal change.

Reflecting on these initial months, I am grateful for the challenges and achievements that have characterized my journey thus far. I express a desire for my department to enhance the practical components of the curriculum, as I have discovered a keen interest in applying theoretical knowledge in practical settings within my field. Additionally, I recommend improvements in our ventilation system and an increase in seating capacity to foster a more conducive learning environment. Looking ahead, I am eager to delve deeper into my studies, contribute meaningfully to my field, and continue evolving as a proficient journalist. The road ahead may be demanding, but I am resolute in seizing the full potential of this remarkable opportunity.
